The Research Methods course taught me to compile statistical information, conduct an analysis, and use that to information to answer research questions. Part B of my data analysis project required me to create a cross tabulation table with three independent variables and formulate a hypothesis. This project required me to synthesize the data tables provided in order to determine if there was a relationship between race, political culture, and party control in different regions. The cross tabulation of information forced me to draw conclusions and use existing literature to support those conclusions. I am now able to use data gathered to make informed decisions.
The second artifact that I will be using is my briefing book from Elections Regulation and Policy. In the Election Regulation and Policy course taught by I analyzed different aspects of an elections policy of my choosing and created a comprehensive briefing book. I chose to write about Felony Disenfranchisement and the disproportionate effect it has on communities of color and poor people. I dissected the policy into specific areas: government infrastructure, the legal landscape, politics and ideology, public opinion, advocacy and third party groups, financial dimensions, two state comparative analysis, and the benefits, challenges. By gathering and synthesizing this information, I was then able to make policy recommendations. While completing this assignment I could not just focus on superficial definitions and issues associated with the problem. I had to take a critical look at the impact of this policy. By identifying, defining, and understanding all of the factors that are relevant to a policy area and the way they interact I am able to provide recommendations and a call to action.
